Perseus network system:

The Perseus network is a development from many years of working with primary and middle school networks.

The server of a Perseus network is a Linux Samba server, or NAS unit.  We most commonly use a LinkSys NAS unit with 2 500Gb drives.  All management of the server can be performed from any workstation.

The client computers on a Perseus system would ideally be Windows XP, but the system can be used with Windows 3.11, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP or Vista

Perseus and Vista

Perseus is now been in use with Microsoft Vista operating system for some months.  Although the current released version does not allow the use of Vista, it would be possible to release the Vista version at any time, when somebody feels that Vista is the right operating system for use in their school.

The program Tnetlite, designed to give standalone PCs and laptops access to Perseus drives does already work in Vista.

Versions of Perseus:

From version 1.40 onwards all stations on a network will update automatically if an update is run on one workstation.

From version 1.50 onwards the intelligent display of program links (icons) on the desktop is improved.

From version 1.60 onwards it is possible to command all workstations to change their IP addresses to an entirely different range and re-boot. Mainly to be used if taking a NATting Cachepilot out of the system, or changing broadband provider.
